Synopsis on Goodreads

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The poverty-stricken Reds are commoners, living in the shadow of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from the Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Then Mare finds herself working at the Silver palace, in the midst of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

~

I’ve had this series sat on my bookshelves for a long while now and i regret not picking it up sooner. I absolutely loved this book and i adore the main character Mare, there is something about her that tugs at me, especially with her situation during the first couple of chapters of the book. Mare and her family are a part of a civilisation dubbed as the ‘Reds’, they are considered as somewhat the poor of the world by the others known as the ‘Silvers’. Due a stroke of bad luck Mare finds herself thrown into the world of the Silvers and while it seems to work well for Mare after she meets the Princes Cal and Maven, it becomes clear towards the last few chapters that her bad luck has just gotten worse.

On the subject of the twist ending, i have to praise Victoria Aveyard for the absolute brilliance that it is, when reading through the book i never expected it to end up that way, it truly makes me excited to read the next book in the series and to see what happens with Mare, Maven and Cal.
